Beaked hazelnuts dropping in mid August

beaked hazelnut, they're dropping today on aug 15 and I've found a few eaten by the squirrels. inside these bristly hulls are a hazelnut, very similar to the american hazelnut and generally smaller than the european filbert, but these shrubs have the advantage that they're super cold hardy down to zone 2, and they're native. hazel is most of the understory in the forest around our place in southern MB. where they get some sun, like this small patch they're much more productive.
