Aug 2, 2026 · Seeds & Stratificationa figurative and literal windfall of blue spruce cones. the top of this tree fell during a storm, and the timing is just about perfect for fully ripe cones that haven't opened yet. the cones form at the top, and they dry and then open before falling so the only way to collect them is to find squirrels caches, use a pole with a cone hook, or to find opportunistic broken branches after a storm. the colorado blue spruce has distinctive cones, they're long with frilly edges on the scales. these ones were just starting to turn brown, and they're sticky with spruce resin so there's a good chance the start of august is the right time for fully formed seeds inside.Read field note →+3
