Cold hardy native larch common across the boreal forest. A true deciduous conifer, it carries soft bright green needles in spring and summer that turn golden yellow before dropping in fall. Cones are small and upright, maturing in one season. Trees grow straight with a narrow crown when young, developing into a taller pyramidal form with age. Tamarack is well adapted to cold climates and thrives in full sun on loam or sandy soils. Once established it tolerates wind, cold, and periods of drought, making it valuable for shelterbelts, reforestation, and naturalized plantings.
