Growing details

Foliage
Pinnately compound leaves with 9-19 narrow, toothed leaflets; red, purple and orange tones can develop late in the season
Hardiness reference
USDA zones 3a-7b; this uses the American zone system
Native range
Native across much of southern Canada and the central and northern United States, including Manitoba
Growing site
Full sun; well-drained sand, loam or clay; moist in spring and tolerant of drier summers; avoid wet winter soil
Seed note
Cold stratification benefits seed propagation; the low foliage mound is a poor competitor with aggressive neighbours
Spread
Spreads gradually by rhizomes; this is not root suckering
