Heartnut Trees (Juglans ailantifolia var. cordiformis) (Zone 5)
A variety of the Japanese Walnut, it shares the species’ fast growth and rounded crown but stands out for its ornamental and edible appeal. Native to Japan, the tree features long, pinnate leaves with serrated leaflets that can reach up to 2 feet, providing a bold presence in the landscape.
At maturity, the Heartnut reaches 30-50 feet in height with a spread of 30-40 feet. Its smooth-shelled nuts are easy to crack and reveal sweet, buttery kernels, perfect for fresh eating or culinary use. The nuts ripen in late summer to early fall and are often grown as a conversation-starting feature.
This hardy tree thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for large gardens, agroforestry projects, or edible landscapes. Its combination of beauty and practicality makes the Heartnut a standout addition to any property.
Note this is a seed lot that we brought in to grow this year but the trees aren't cold hardy to our region, they're more appropriate for the coast or southern Ontario and Quebec.
