Heartnut is a variety of Japanese Walnut (Juglans ailantifolia) selected for heart shaped nuts with smoother shells and sweet kernels. The trees have long pinnate leaves and a broad, rounded crown.
The nuts ripen from late summer into early fall and are eaten fresh or used in cooking. These seedlings were grown from seed sourced in British Columbia and are intended for the coast and milder parts of Ontario and Quebec rather than the central prairies.
