Heartnut Trees (Juglans ailantifolia var. cordiformis) (Zone 5)

Heartnut is a variety of Japanese Walnut (Juglans ailantifolia) selected for heart shaped nuts with smoother shells and sweet kernels. The trees have long pinnate leaves and a broad, rounded crown.

Heartnut reaches 30 to 50 ft tall and 30 to 40 ft wide. The nuts ripen from late summer into early fall and are eaten fresh or used in cooking. This seed lot came from British Columbia and is intended for the coast and milder parts of Ontario and Quebec rather than the central prairies.
