Garrington Chokecherry is a selected strain of Prunus virginiana with large fruit. It originated near Garrington, Alberta, and was adopted by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (the PFRA in Canada) as a seed parent for prairie shelterbelt programs. Garrington was maintained through seed, so what exists today is a strain derived from those original plantings rather than an exact genetic duplicate of a single plant. Compared to wild chokecherry populations, Garrington seedlings are generally more larger and more productive, with large clusters of dark purple fruit and strong, vigorous growth.
Prunus virginiana is hardy to Zone 3 and is well suited to northern climates, where it tolerates poor soils, cold winters, and drought better than many fruiting shrubs.
Hardiness Zone: 3
Stratification Required: 3–4 months
