Freedom is a McIntosh descendant with Malus floribunda 821 in its lineage, released in 1983 for disease resistance. The medium to large mostly red fruit has a mild sweet and subacid flavour and ripens from the middle to late part of the season.
The vigorous trees have a spur bearing habit, immunity to apple scab, and some resistance to powdery mildew and cedar apple rust.
