Downy Hawthorn (Crataegus mollis) - Native Fruit Tree - 50+ Seeds
Downy Hawthorn (Crataegus mollis) is one of the larger hawthorn species, reaching 20 to 40 ft. It is native to Canada and the United States and was called White Thorn in records from the 1600s. Its broad, softly hairy leaves are the source of the name Downy Hawthorn.
The tree produces many flowers followed by large red fruit and develops silvery, scaly bark with age. The edible fruit is used for jams and jellies, while the leaves and flowers have been used for tea. Downy Hawthorn tolerates dry soil and provides food and cover for wildlife.
