Downy Hawthorn (Crataegus mollis) is one of the larger hawthorn species. Its large red edible fruit is used for jam and jelly, while the tree also provides food and cover for wildlife.
Native to Canada and the United States, it was called White Thorn in records from the 1600s. Broad softly hairy leaves give the species its current common name, and the bark becomes silvery and scaly with age.
