Chicago Hardy Fig, also known as the Bensonhurst Purple, is a cold-hardy fig variety that can survive temperatures as low as -20°F (-29°C) when well-protected. Originating from the Chicago area, this fig is ideal for cooler climates and produces medium-sized, dark purple-brown fruits with a sweet, rich flavor. The figs ripen from late summer into early fall and are excellent for fresh eating, drying, or making preserves. The plant has an attractive, shrubby growth habit with large, deeply lobed green leaves that add an exotic touch to gardens.

Chicago Hardy Fig thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soils. It can be grown in-ground in milder regions or as a container plant in colder areas, where it can be moved indoors during the winter. This cultivar is self-pollinating and low-maintenance, making it a great choice for those looking to grow figs in less-than-ideal climates.
