Captivator Gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa ‘Captivator’)
Captivator Gooseberry is a productive and hardy shrub prized for its nearly thornless stems and sweet, juicy fruit. A hybrid between American and European gooseberry varieties, it combines excellent cold hardiness with superior fruit quality.
This compact shrub grows to about 3-5 feet tall and wide, with arching branches and green, lobed leaves that create a lush appearance. In spring, small, bell-shaped flowers bloom discreetly, followed by berries that ripen in mid- to late summer. The fruit starts green and matures to a rich, pinkish-red, with a thin skin and a sweet, mildly tart flavor perfect for fresh eating, pies, and jams.
Captivator thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Its tolerance for cold winters makes it a good fit for Canadian climates, and its almost thornless stems make harvesting a breeze. Beyond its practical uses, this gooseberry adds charm to edible gardens and small landscapes.
