Black walnuts trees grown from seed collected locally in Manitoba. They're selected for above average cold hardiness and nut production in a cold climate. These hard to find mature trees in southern Manitoba have made it through some selection pressure to be hardy to the Canadian prairies, compared to walnuts imported from warmer provinces.
Black walnut can grow up to 80-90 ft tall, with a straight trunk and an open, rounded crown. They produce nuts in round, green husks about the size of an orange that drop in early October and inside is the edible black walnut. The trees are attractive with compound leaves growing up to 24 inches long.
