Black walnut trees grown from locally collected Manitoba seed are selected for above average cold hardiness and nut production in a cold climate. The seed comes from mature trees that are hard to find in southern Manitoba. These trees have endured selection pressure for Canadian prairie hardiness, providing a locally adapted source compared with walnuts imported from warmer provinces.
Black walnut can grow 80 to 90 ft tall, with a straight trunk and an open, rounded crown. Round green husks about the size of an orange fall in early October, with an edible black walnut inside. The attractive compound leaves can grow up to 24 inches long.
