butternuts. locally sourced in Manitoba. First time I’ve had them off the tree, the husk is much thinner than a black walnut. I’ll husk them this week and get a count, might have enough to add to the seed shop along with the black walnuts. Mostly these are to grow in the spring. #butternut

It's the same tree that produces valuable walnut hardwood. black walnut has a thicker shell than english walnuts, so they need a good nut cracker. We're excited to offer black walnuts collected from Manitoba, selected for above average cold hardiness and nut production in a colder climate than typical walnut trees. These hard to find mature trees in southern Manitoba have made it through some selection pressure to be hardy to the Canadian prairies, compared to walnuts imported from warmer provinces.
Black walnut can grow up to 80-90 ft tall, with a straight trunk and an open, rounded crown.They produce nuts in round, green husks about the size of an orange that drop in early October and inside is the edible black walnut. The trees are attractive with compound leaves growing up to 24 inches long. Note that a walnut tree's roots produce a chemical called juglone, and new studies show that it rarely if ever affects the growth of nearby plants.

Germination: Note that walnuts can have a deep dormancy, when we grow these some nuts will germinate right away in the spring and others need more time and germination can continue into late summer.
