Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) seed was collected from mature Manitoba trees selected for cold hardiness and nut production under prairie conditions. Unlike seed brought in from warmer provinces, this source has already been exposed to the colder winters of southern Manitoba.
The edible nuts mature inside round green husks about the size of an orange and usually drop in early October. Mature trees have a straight trunk, an open rounded crown, and compound leaves up to 24 inches long. Black Walnut roots produce juglone, although its effect on nearby plants is often less severe than commonly assumed.
Walnuts can have deep dormancy. Some nuts germinate promptly in spring, while others need more time and may continue germinating into late summer.
