Putting the Nursery Away for Winter

Oak Summit Nursery · Southern Manitoba

with our fall shipping season over my next task is to crate up all of the remaining and pack into the rootcellar for spring. some are fully dormant, so stating with those. a few things like peaches like ho hold their leaves late, while the walnuts dropped them weeks ago. some of the plugs are smaller plants that I'll just store and pot up or line into in ground beds next spring, the rest will be available, along with a new selection from the bare root beds in december. this seasonal shift and how it goes down is becoming more familiar, it gets adjusted and sometimes completely changed from year to year, going into I think the 5th or 6th winter I've had at the nusery it's getting more usual and everyday. exactly how many plants to grow is still an open question, I'm limited in how many orders to take just to keep things on a mostly owner operated scale.. I've had a couple of startups grow to ten or a dozen employees and honestly I have different aspirations for how to run a craft scale nursery, a simple one I can enjoy more.
