Hardy Berries and Currants: Fall Field Notes
Field note · September 2026
nannyberries ripening quickly
nannyberries ripening quickly, this year was a rec to get them before the birds. you can't tell by I'm standing in water up to my ankles to collect these, so I'm going to say that the trees handle waterlogged land soil well. the fruit cut this cool multi colored effect just the day before they ripen to black, in the last two photos I set some out to take a photo in better light the next morning and nearly all the green/red fruit had ripened over night. if you haven't tried nannyberry they have a savory flavour that's like a date but more woody, totally unique. they're related to highbush cranberry, the fruit grow to the same size and in the same clusters, the seeds are the same large and flat like a watermelon seed, but these aren't sour at all, and they're a deep blue/black color.
