Fruit Tree Grafting: Summer Field Notes
Field note · August 2026
Favoritka pear grafted onto Saskatoon
favoritka pear grafted onto a small saskatoon tree three years ago. It's just a small shaded tree, and could use some closer pear for good pollination, but despite the odds and this branch nearly touching the ground there are a few pears. do deer eat pears? they keep finding my plum and apple grafts, so far this one is ok.. generally in an area where there are deer I keep grafts above shoulder height, though this year the fruit set has some hanging lower. saskatoon make a dwarfing pear rootstock, and has the advantage that it was already growing here wild. it's zone 2 hardy, and rabbits and rodents won't girdle it, they will eat apple/pear I guess the bark or cambium taste better
