Cold hardy five needle pine native to Siberia and northern Asia. Closely related to Korean stone pine and with large edible pine nuts.
Trees grow 50 to 100 feet tall with a dense conical crown when young, becoming broader with age. Needles are soft blue green in bundles of five, giving a full ornamental look. Cones are large and heavy, when we collected and tried them the cones break apart easily with a high density of pine nuts. Very tolerant of extreme cold and poor soils, making it well suited to northern shelterbelts, reforestation, and as a specimen tree. Slow growing but long lived.
We have them in small plugs and pots this year, they're small and should get grown on in a larger pot or garden bed for another year or two before moving to their permanent location.
Hardiness: Zone 2
