Blackdown Black Currant (Ribes nigrum 'Blackdown')
Blackdown Black Currant (Ribes nigrum 'Blackdown')
'Blackdown' is a classic black currant cultivar known for its high yields and rich, deep flavor. The berries are medium to large, glossy black, and ripen in mid-summer, typically from late June to early July. It's particularly valued for its sweet, tart taste with a complex flavor profile that makes it ideal for a variety of uses, including fresh eating, juices, jams, jellies, and baking. The berries are also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.
This cultivar grows as a compact, upright shrub, reaching about 3-5 feet in both height and spread, making it suitable for small gardens, hedgerows, or mixed borders.
'Blackdown' thrives best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soils. While it is self-fertile, planting it with other black currant varieties can enhance fruit production and overall yield.
