Black Nanking Cherry (Prunus tomentosa x Prunus besseyi 'Nigra')
Black Nanking Cherry (Prunus tomentosa x Prunus besseyi 'Nigra')
The Black Nanking Cherry is a unique twist on the traditional Nanking Cherry, featuring nearly black fruit instead of the usual bright red. Growing 6-10 feet tall and wide, this shrub is perfect for hedges, screens, or adding interest to a mixed border. In early spring, it puts on a show with loads of small, pinkish-white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.
By mid-summer, you’ll see clusters of dark purple to black cherries. The fruit is small and tart, great for making jams or jellies, and can even be eaten fresh if you like a bit of tang. Native to northern Asia, the Black Nanking Cherry is tough enough to handle cold Canadian winters.
