toka softwood cuttings, a hybrid plum tree that has some cool traits, it's crossed with Simonii the chinese apricot plum, done about a century ago by hansen in SD. it survives -40, grows plums that taste like bubblegum, its softwood can root and it grafts onto chokecherry. suffice to say it's been featured in my experiments with own rooted plums and chokecherry rootstocks. Here I've collected cuttings at just the right stage to root them, from grafts onto wild chokecherry that are about 12 ft high. they're on a list with other prunus cutting stick in the greenhouse this weekend, a mix of cherry plums old and new, and some hybrid russian and euro ones to see if they can in fact grow roots under mist. this experimental side to the nursery work has a decent amount of uncovered territory, enough to keep me interested in trying new combinations.
