Wild Red Currant (Ribes triste) is a low, spreading shrub native to northern North America. Its translucent red berries resemble cultivated red currants but are usually more sour, and they feed birds and small mammals.
The species grows in bogs, wet woodland, and stream margins. Broad, heart shaped leaves have three to five lobes and finely toothed edges. The low shrubs support wildlife and provide cover in naturalized and restoration plantings.
