White Pearl Currant (Ribes rubrum 'White Pearl')
White Pearl Currant (Ribes rubrum 'White Pearl')
The White Pearl Currant is a cultivar of the red currant, distinguished by its clusters of translucent white berries. An “albino” variety, this currant retains the characteristic tartness of red currants but with a milder, sweeter flavor. The berries have a slight golden hue.
Growing up to 3-5 feet tall and wide, the White Pearl Currant is a hardy, self-fertile shrub well-suited for cooler climates, thriving in full sun to partial shade. It is particularly productive and can yield generous clusters of berries in mid-summer. White currants are less acidic than their red or black counterparts, providing a unique, sweeter alternative that stands out in the garden.
