Native Blackberry (Rubus sp.)
Native Blackberry (Rubus sp.)
A native blackberry from Quebec, probably Northern Blackberry (Rubus allegheniensis). They're adapted to the cooler climates and varied soils of the region, thriving in forest edges, clearings, and open fields. Unlike cultivated varieties, these native blackberries are more cold hardy and resilient, and have benefits for our native pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. They are ideal for naturalizing in wild gardens, hedgerows, or woodland edges. We're trying them out in zone 3, but suspect they're borderline hardy here so a sheltered location in colder zones is recommended.
Cold Hardiness Zone: 3-4
Mature Size: 3-6 ft tall, 3-8 ft wide
