Alpine Strawberry, Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca)
Alpine Strawberry is a compact, perennial plant that produces small, intensely flavored strawberries continuously throughout the growing season. Unlike larger, cultivated varieties, these strawberries are known for their unique, aromatic flavor, often described as a mix of wild strawberry and pineapple. The berries are typically bright red, although some cultivars yield yellow or white fruit, and are about the size of a blueberry, making them ideal for fresh eating or garnishing.
Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Alpine Strawberries grow in neat clumps, reaching about 6-12 inches in height and width. They thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefer well-drained, fertile soil. Unlike common garden strawberries, they produce very few runners. Like other strawberries we recommend covering them for some extra winter protection.
