so wild Licorice is around in the forest here (southern Manitoba zone 3) seems it’s a cool permaculture plant with a root that somehow prepared tastes like Licorice and at the minimum it’s a nitrogen fixer. I’ve collected some seed and added it to our site in case anyone wants to try growing it #seeds #nativeseeds

Wild Licorice (Glycyrrhiza lepidota) collected from native plants in the forest around our nursery (Zone 3b).
It's a hardy perennial plant that grows a few feet tall, and it has woody edible roots with a licorice flavour. The plants have brown pods that are covered with long hooked prickles. They're also a nitrogen fixer.
Hardiness Zone: 3
Scarification: Soak in water for 24 hrs
Stratification Required: none
Planting instructions: Fall plant into prepared seed beds, or plant in early spring 1/4" deep and mulch. Should germinate within 2-3 weeks.
