The Westcot Apricot is a robust and productive variety, ideal for backyard orchards. Developed as a cross between Scout and McClure apricots, this cultivar was introduced in 1982 by Agriculture Canada in Morden, Manitoba. Renowned for its hardiness, the Westcot Apricot withstands extremely cold temperatures, even down to -48°F, making it one of the hardiest apricots available. This self-fertile variety blooms slightly before Debbie’s Gold and produces large, golden, freestone fruits. The fruits feature a yellow-orange skin with a sweet taste, measured at 18 degrees Brix, and a firm texture suitable for both fresh consumption and canning. Its irregular growth habit can be managed with training and spreaders. This variety requires a second apricot for cross-pollination, full sun, and well-drained soil. It's important to note that late spring frosts can damage the flowers.
