Valiant is a cold-hardy grape cultivar renowned for its ability to thrive in harsh climates where many other grape varieties cannot. Developed at South Dakota State University, 'Valiant' is a cross between the native Vitis riparia and the more common Vitis labrusca, combining excellent cold hardiness with good fruit quality. It can withstand temperatures as low as -50°F (-45°C), making it ideal for Zone 2 and other cold regions.

The grapes are small to medium-sized, blue-purple, and ripen early, typically in late August to early September. They have a sweet, tangy flavor with a hint of the characteristic "foxy" note common to Vitis labrusca types, making them suitable for fresh eating, juice, jelly, and wine production. ‘Valiant’ grapes are also known for their high sugar content, which contributes to their rich taste.

This cultivar grows as a vigorous, climbing vine, reaching up to 15-20 feet in length, and performs best in full sun with well-drained soil. 'Valiant' is moderately resistant to common grape diseases, such as powdery mildew and downy mildew, although good air circulation and regular monitoring are beneficial for maintaining plant health.
