The Toka Plum, also known as Bubblegum Plum, was introduced in 1911 and is a cross between the American Plum (Prunus americana) and the Japanese Plum (Prunus salicina). This hybrid is celebrated for its cold hardiness, fast growth, and ornamental qualities. The tree, originating from South Dakota, typically grows up to 15-20 feet in height and width, showcasing an erect, vase-like shape. The Toka Plum is renowned for its fruit, which has reddish-bronze skin and juicy, apricot-colored flesh. The fruit is described as medium-to-large, firm, spicy, and sweet, resembling the taste and aroma of bubblegum. Additionally, the Toka Plum is an excellent pollinator for both Japanese and American plums, producing heavy crops that ripen in late August to September. This variety thrives best in full sun and prefers loamy, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil.
