Superior Plum (Prunus salicina × Prunus americana ‘Superior’)

Cold hardy hybrid plum released by the University of Minnesota in 1933. Cross between Japanese plum (Prunus salicina) and American plum (Prunus americana). Trees grow 12 to 15 feet tall with an upright spreading form. White blossoms appear in spring followed by medium to large heart shaped fruit. Skin is red to crimson and the flesh is yellow, juicy, and sweet with a flavor considered among the best of the hardy hybrids. Ripens mid to late August. Requires a second plum for pollination, usually another hybrid or American plum.
