Staghorn Sumac Seeds (Rhus typhina) - Zone 3-4 - 50+ Seeds
Staghorn Sumac is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America. It can grow 15-25 feet tall and is characterized by a rounded crown and umbrella-shaped branches. The plant is named for its branches, which resemble the velvet-covered antlers of a young stag. Staghorn Sumac features large, compound leaves that are oblong and pinnately lobed. In late spring, it produces dense clusters of small, greenish-yellow flowers. By autumn, the leaves transform into bright yellow, orange, and red hues, and the branches display fuzzy, raspberry-like fruits.
This versatile plant thrives in full to partial sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to a variety of conditions, including dry spells. It tolerates both cold and hot temperatures, making it suitable for growth in USDA hardiness zones 4-8.
Cold Hardiness Zone: 3-4
Seed Source: PA, USA (Zone 5b - 7a)
Cold Stratification: 2 months
Scarification: Hot water then soak 24 hours
Planting Instructions: Plant seeds in moist, well-drained soil after stratification. Ensure they are lightly covered with soil and kept consistently moist. Full sun to partial shade is ideal for optimal growth. Seedlings should be protected from extreme weather and strong winds.
