Smooth Sumac is a native North American shrub that thrives in various environments, including southern Manitoba. It features bright green, compound leaves that turn striking shades of orange and purple in the fall. This deciduous shrub can reach up to 3 meters (10 feet) tall, making it a bold addition to landscapes. A pioneer species, Smooth Sumac is often found in disturbed soils and plays a key role in stabilizing the ground with its robust root system. Its ability to colonize open spaces quickly makes it useful for erosion control and habitat restoration projects. It’s often found in woodland edges and clearings.
