Smokey Saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia 'Smokey') is a well-regarded cultivar known for its large, sweet, and juicy berries, selected in Alberta for its superior fruit quality and reliable yields. While the parent cultivar is known for its large fruit and consistent performance, seedlings grown from Smokey Saskatoon seeds may display natural variation in fruit size, flavor, and growth habits due to genetic diversity. These variations occur because seedlings are not clones of the parent plant, making each one slightly unique. However, many seedlings still retain desirable traits such as the cold hardiness (USDA zones 2), tolerance to drought once established, and attractive spring blooms followed by summer berries. Typically growing as a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree reaching 10-15 feet tall, Saskatoons are valued not only for their fruit but also for their adaptability to various soils and climates.
