The Siberian crabapple (Malus baccata) is native to Siberia, Northern China, and Mongolia. It was introduced to North America in the early 1900s by Niels E. Hansen of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. Breeding this species with European apples has led to the development of many cold-hardy apple cultivars. Siberian crabapples are full-sized trees, reaching 30 to 40 feet in height with a broad, rounded canopy. The fruit size ranges from 0.5 to 1 inch, depending on hybridization.  'Dolgo' is an example of a Malus baccata selection from the early 1900s. Notably cold-hardy, Siberian crabapple is often used as rootstock, and is excellent for wildlife. It is generally considered more cold-hardy than the 'Antonovka' apple. The term 'Ranetka' refers to Malus baccata with some amount of hybridization with other apples.
