Sapalta Cherry-Plum (Prunus 'Sapalta')
The Sapalta Cherry-Plum is a hardy hybrid resulting from a cross between the sand cherry (Prunus besseyi) and the Japanese plum (Prunus salicina). This combination was developed in the early 1900s to create fruit-bearing plants capable of withstanding the harsh winters of the northern Great Plains. This shrub-like tree reaches about 12-15 feet in height and 8-10 feet in width, featuring a rounded form with dark green leaves that turn yellow in the fall. In spring, it produces clusters of fragrant white flowers, which give way to small, reddish-purple fruits that ripen in mid-August. The plums have deep purple flesh with a firm texture and a tart skin, offering a sweet-tart flavor suitable for fresh eating, canning, and making jams.
Sapalta thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, making it ideal for home orchards in colder climates. It requires cross-pollination with another cherry-plum cultivar or sand cherry to set fruit effectively. Its resilience and consistent fruit production make it a valuable addition to northern gardens.
