Sandbar Willow (Salix exigua) - Hardwood Cuttings
Sandbar Willow, or Salix exigua, is a native North American shrub or small tree, commonly found across various regions in Canada. It typically grows to a height of 4 to 15 feet with a similar spread, and is known for its slender and elongated form. This species is hardy in zones 3 to 9, demonstrating adaptability to a wide range of climates.
Ideal growing conditions for Sandbar Willow include moist to wet soils, often found along riverbanks, in wetlands, and on sandbars, as its common name suggests. It thrives in full sun, requiring significant daily exposure for optimal growth. Sandbar Willow is particularly well-suited for riparian environments where it plays a vital role in soil stabilization and ecosystem health.
Historically, willows have been valued in various cultures for their flexible branches and medicinal properties. Sandbar Willow, with its narrow leaves and slender branches, has been used for basket weaving and other traditional crafts. Its rapid growth and ability to colonize new areas quickly make it effective for erosion control and habitat restoration projects.
Sandbar Willow blooms in the spring, producing small, inconspicuous flowers. It is not known for a specific breeder or a unique origin story as it is a naturally occurring species in North America. Its environmental significance, combined with its practical uses in traditional crafts, makes it a noteworthy plant in both naturalized and cultivated landscapes.
Hardwood cuttings for spring planting. Willow can root easily from dormant cuttings, push them at least half way into the ground and keep well watered through the first summer.
