Red Currant (Ribes rubrum)
Red currant, unknown cultivar propagated from some bushes we planted over twenty years ago. Full of fruit and growing well in an old farm yard in southern Manitoba.
Red currant (Ribes rubrum) is a shrub with clusters of bright red berries, it's related to the black currant. These berries are about 0.5 - 1 cm in diameter, and the flavour is different from black currants, it could be described as tangy with a bit of tartness, perfect for jams, jellies, sauces, and desserts. The bushes are hardy and can be shade tolerant, though you'll get a better crop of fruit in full sun. They're native to Europe, red currants have been cultivated since the 17th century.
