Norkent began as a Haralson x Rescue seedling at the Morden Research Station in the 1960s through Agriculture Canada's Prairie Fruit Breeding Cooperative. It was later selected by the University of Alberta and introduced by Beaverlodge Research Station in 1990.
The medium to very large apples are yellow to yellow orange with red streaking. Aromatic crisp juicy flesh has hints of pear and a sweet, almost caramelized, low acid flavour compared with Golden Delicious.
Norkent ripens from late August into early or mid September and can store for up to 14 weeks. It is best fresh and also useful for cooking.
