A native tree with sweet and tasty blue-black fruit, locally collected seed in southern Manitoba. It's is a cold-hardy, adaptable shrub or small tree native to North America, particularly thriving in Canada’s colder regions. Reaching heights of 15-20 feet, it boasts oval, glossy green leaves that turn a vibrant red to purplish color in autumn. In spring, nannyberry produces clusters of small, creamy white flowers, followed by blue-black, edible berries in late summer to early fall. The berries are sweet and appealing to wildlife, particularly birds, and can also be used for preserves. Nannyberry tolerates a range of soils, from dry to wet conditions, making it well-suited for various landscapes, including borders and naturalized areas.
