Indigo Gem Haskap (Lonicera caerulea 'Indigo Gem')
Indigo Gem Haskap (Lonicera caerulea 'Indigo Gem')
The Indigo series of haskaps includes several cultivars like 'Indigo Gem,' 'Indigo Treat,' and 'Indigo Yum,' all developed by the University of Saskatchewan in Canada to adapt to cold climates and produce high-quality fruit. The series was bred specifically for early ripening, cold hardiness (down to Zone 2), and high fruit yields, making these cultivars excellent for Canadian and other northern gardens.
- 'Indigo Gem': Known for its spreading habit, medium-sized, oval berries with a sweet-tart flavor, and early ripening.
- 'Indigo Treat': More compact and upright than 'Indigo Gem,' with smaller, firmer berries that are also sweet-tart but with a slightly more intense flavor.
These cultivars are all self-sterile and require cross-pollination with another haskap variety for fruit production, one that flowers at the same time.
Cold Hardiness Zone: 2
