Indigo Treat Haskap (Lonicera caerulea 'Indigo Treat'
Indigo Treat Haskap is a compact, early-ripening berry shrub, perfect for adding a unique touch to your garden. This cultivar stands out for its small but intensely flavored blue berries, which ripen in late spring to early summer. The berries are oval and slightly elongated, with a deep blue skin and a tangy, sweet-tart taste that’s ideal for fresh eating, jams, or baking. Unlike many other haskap varieties, Indigo Treat is known for its firm berries, making it easier to harvest and store.
- 'Indigo Gem': Known for its spreading habit, medium-sized, oval berries with a sweet-tart flavor, and early ripening.
-
'Indigo Treat': More compact and upright than 'Indigo Gem,' with smaller, firmer berries that are also sweet-tart but with a slightly more intense flavor.
Native to boreal forests and low-lying wetlands across Canada, Haskaps are incredibly cold-hardy, and Indigo Treat is no exception—it thrives in cold climates down to Zone 2. The shrub remains relatively small, reaching a mature size of about 3-4 feet in both height and spread. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil for optimal growth.
Indigo Treat is self-sterile, so planting it alongside other haskap varieties like 'Aurora' or 'Borealis' can increase fruit yield. Its small size, high yield, and adaptability to cold climates make it a fantastic addition to edible landscapes or small gardens.
