Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum)
Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum)
Goji Berry is a hardy, deciduous shrub reaching a height of 6-10 feet with a similar spread. It grows with arching branches almost like canes and the cool thing about Goji is it flowers and fruits all season, growing small oblong red fruit that have a grassy tomato taste. The berries are sweet and slightly tart, commonly enjoyed fresh, dried, or in teas and smoothies.
Native to China and parts of Asia, Goji Berry shrubs are incredibly resilient and can adapt to a variety of soil types, from sandy to clay, as long as they are well-drained. They thrive in full sun, which encourages the most abundant fruiting, and are also drought-tolerant once established. In addition to being attractive and edible, the shrubs are prized for their antioxidant-rich berries, which are considered a "superfood."
