Frostbite is a small to medium-sized apple with a size range of 2.2 to 2.6 inches (5.6 - 6.6 cm), is known for its very sweet and crisp flavor. This novelty apple is predominantly maroon red over a yellow-gold background, with red striping on yellow skin. It was developed in Minnesota, first fruited in 1921, and introduced by the University of Minnesota in 2008. Frostbite™ is extremely cold hardy, suitable for growing in zones 3 and 4, and is particularly valued for its unique and intense taste. This apple is described as having a massively flavored dessert quality, with astonishing eaters describing its taste as akin to molasses, olives, sugar cane, cheap whisky, or yogurt. It is also noted for its firm, juicy, cream-colored flesh and is recommended for both fresh eating and in cider. The Frostbite apple is a late-season variety, ripening from late September to mid-October, usually 1 to 3 weeks after the Honeycrisp..
