Cumin is a warm-season annual herb grown for its small, aromatic seeds, which have been a staple in global cuisine for centuries. It features delicate, feathery leaves and produces clusters of tiny white or pink flowers that develop into the well-known cumin seeds. This plant thrives in hot, dry conditions and requires a long growing season to mature fully.
Native to the eastern Mediterranean and South Asia, cumin prefers full sun and well-drained soil. In Canada, it can be challenging to grow outdoors due to its long maturation time (about 3-4 months), making it best suited for greenhouse cultivation or warm microclimates. The plant grows up to 1-2 feet tall and has a slender, branching form. Once the seeds ripen and turn brown, they are harvested and dried for culinary use.
