The Common Ninebark is a versatile and hardy deciduous shrub. It typically grows 5 to 8 feet in height and spreads 4 to 6 feet. This plant is known for its appealing aesthetics throughout the year, characterized by young twigs that are shiny and reddish-brown and older stems featuring exfoliating brown bark. The leaves of the Ninebark are simple, with 3 to 5 lobes, dark green on the top, and paler green underneath. In the fall, the foliage turns a stunning bronze-yellow.

Ninebark is renowned for its small, clustered flowers, ranging from white to pink, which bloom from late May to early June. Following the flowering period, it bears reddish fruit with inflated seed capsules that persist into winter, attracting seed-eating birds. The plant’s exfoliating bark is particularly noteworthy, peeling in strips to reveal reddish to light brown inner layers, creating winter interest.

In its native habitat of central and eastern North America, Ninebark thrives along stream banks, rocky ledges, and in moist thickets. It is adaptable to a variety of conditions, performing best in well-drained soils and full sun, though it tolerates partial shade and a range of soil types. This resilience extends to its ability to handle occasional droughts, road salt, and wet sites.

Ninebark serves as an excellent choice for mass plantings in shrub borders, hedges, screens, or for erosion control on banks. Additionally, it can be a beautiful addition to native plant gardens.
