Crandall is a popular selection of the native Clove Currant with large tasty fruit. It doesn't have the typical astringency found in other Clove Currants, and it's quite different from Black Currants. Seedlings from this fruit will be genetically distinct but should be quite similar.
Clove Currant is closely related to the Golden currant (Ribes aureum), but with black fruit. Both have the easy to identify lobed leaves. It has clove scented yellow flowers in early spring. It's native to North America, grows taller than average black currants up to 6-8 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide. We have some bushes over 20 years old at our farm.
