Carmine Jewel Seedling (Prunus 'Carmine Jewel')
Seedlings grown from Carmine Jewel. While the trees won't be identical to the cultivar, they'll be similar and sour cherry seedlings often have very good fruit quality.
Carmine Jewel is a standout among sour cherries, particularly for cold climates. This hybrid cross between a Mongolian cherry and a sour cherry produces dark, almost black cherries with a high sugar content and a tart edge, perfect for fresh eating, pies, or preserves. Unlike many other sour cherry varieties, Carmine Jewel is naturally dwarf, reaching only about 6-8 feet in height, making it ideal for smaller landscapes or even container growing. It also offers a heavy yield and begins fruiting as early as three years after planting. With its cold hardiness down to Zone 2, this variety is exceptionally suited for the Canadian prairies and other harsh winter climates.
We grew some in a couple of pot sizes this year and found the seedlings grew just as well in our both our 2.5" and 3.5" pots.
Cold Hardiness Zone: 2
Mature Size: 6-8 ft tall, 5-6 ft wide
