Caragana (Caragana arborescens)

Cold hardy shrub or small tree also called Siberian peashrub. Grows 10 to 15 feet tall and is often used in shelterbelts and windbreaks across the prairies. Leaves are compound with many small leaflets that give a light airy look. Yellow pea like flowers appear in spring followed by narrow seed pods. Very drought tolerant once established and will grow in poor soils. Often planted for erosion control, as a living fence, and as a hardy nitrogen fixing species that improves soil.
