Callery Pear Seeds (Pyrus calleryana) - Zone 4-5 - 30+ Seeds
Pyrus calleryana, commonly known as Callery Pear, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to Asia and widely recognized for its ornamental value. It typically grows 30-40 feet tall, with a variable form, sometimes pyramidal to rounded. The tree is noted for its showy white flowers that bloom in early spring before the leaves emerge, attracting birds. The leaves are alternate, simple, leathery, glossy dark green, and can develop spectacular reddish-purple hues in the fall. The bark on mature trees is lightly furrowed and grayish brown.
Although initially bred to be sterile, cross-pollination between different cultivars of Callery pears has resulted in fertile seeds, contributing to its invasive nature in some regions. The fruit is small, rounded, and inedible, often dispersed by birds. The wood of the Callery Pear is highly valued for making woodwind instruments and for woodcuts in printing.
Cultivars such as 'Chanticleer', 'Autumn Blaze', and 'Bradford' are popular for their distinct characteristics and adaptability to a range of soil conditions, including heavy clays. However, caution is advised as the species has been reported as invasive in multiple states in the U.S. and is known to form dense thickets, outcompeting native flora. The Callery Pear is hardy to USDA Zone 5, with some cultivars being hardy to Zone 4.
