Set a reminderButternut (Juglans cinerea), also called White Walnut, is a slow growing tree native to eastern North America. This seed was collected in Manitoba.
Mature trees reach 12 to 18 m with an open spreading crown, compound leaves, and light grey bark. The sweet oily nuts have deeply ridged shells inside sticky green husks that ripen and fall from September into October. Butternut grows naturally along rivers and in mixed hardwood forests, usually in well drained soil and full sun. The first product photo includes one Black Walnut on the right for comparison.
Butternuts can have deep dormancy. Some nuts germinate promptly in spring, while others need more time and may continue germinating into late summer.
