Butternut (Juglans cinerea), also called White Walnut, is a slow growing tree native to eastern North America. This seed was collected in Manitoba.

The sweet oily nuts have deeply ridged shells inside sticky green husks that ripen and fall from September into October. Mature trees develop an open spreading crown, compound leaves, and light grey bark.

Butternuts can have deep dormancy. Some nuts germinate promptly in spring, while others need more time and may continue germinating into late summer.
