Butternuts collected from Manitoba. The butternut, also known as white walnut, is a hardy, slow-growing tree native to eastern North America, reaching 12-18 meters in height with an open, spreading crown. This deciduous tree is recognized by its compound leaves with serrated leaflets, light gray bark, and distinctive oval nuts with a deeply ridged shell. Butternuts are sweet and oily, encased in a sticky, green husk that ripens and falls from September to October. This species naturally thrives in well-drained soils along rivers and mixed hardwood forests, favoring full sun for optimal growth.
In the first photo shown with a single black walnut on right for comparison.
