The Buartnut is a fascinating hybrid tree, combining the robust qualities of the butternut (Juglans cinerea) and heartnut (Juglans ailantifolia var. cordiformis). This unique cross offers the best of both parent species: the heartnut’s rounded shape and easier cracking, paired with the rich, buttery flavor of the butternut. Its nuts are medium-sized with thick shells and are a favorite for baking or fresh eating.
This tree is medium to large, reaching 40-60 feet in height and spreading up to 30 feet at maturity. Its deeply furrowed bark and pinnate leaves add texture to landscapes, making it a visually appealing choice for larger properties. Buartnuts thrive in full sun and prefer well-drained soils but tolerate a variety of conditions.
